Mud Sweat & Runners has invited Niamh Gaffney to teach a wilderness first aid course here in Glendalough.
Niamh Gaffney.... I am an PHECC registered emergency medical technician, occupational first aid and cardiac first responder instructor. For the last 4years I have been a volunteer with St Johns Ambulance and have hundreds of hours of hands on experience with patients.
For 10 years I am personally involved in a number of outdoor sports including climbing, mountain biking, road biking and hill walking. I have taught a number of mountain biking and climbing specific first aid courses, all my courses are recognised by relevant governing bodies.
I look forward to coming along to your club to share my personal experiences and arm you with the first aid skills to deal with the mishaps of the great outdoors!

So, here’s the low down on first aid for hill walkers and runners….
This 4 hour first aid course will start with scene management and safety. As a first aider you will need to take control of the scene and ensure your safety as well as everyone else.
Next topic will be basic patient assessment. Where do you begin when you have a patient, what do you treat first, what if there is a life threatening injury or illness? After patient assessment will we focus on the most common injuries sustained by hill walkers and runners such as lower leg injuries.
We will cover a wide range of illnesses such as cardiac and stroke.
This course will be very hands on, we will simulate real life scenarios such as you could face when out in the hills. You will learn how to immobilise a spinal injury patient. We will cover the basics of CPR and choking.
As this is an outdoor based course please dress appropriately, we will be staying in a small area of the outdoors but please wear outdoor footwear and rain gear.
Please bring pen and paper for notes Wear waterproof shoes similiar to what you would wear hill running or hiking, bring warm jacket as we will be standing around outdoors and bring a rain coat.
At the end of this course you will receive a wilderness first aid certificate.
This course will cost €50 and you will get a wilderness first aid certiicate
