How to stop losing race places to someone who knows how to read a map.
A preparation course for the open mountain races such as IMRA etc..
Who is this course for?
Mountain runners who want to run off the beaten track.
Wednesday night hill racers who long to try the longer weekend races but fear 'getting lost'.
Adventure racers who have to pick up the pieces when their designated team navigator falls asleep on her/his feet.
In fact anyone who feels constrained by a fear of maps, compasses and the jargon
Who is delivering the course?
Paul Nolan a qualified Mountain Leader
Who's he?
Former hill runner, map maker and orienteer'.
In his second hill race Paul lost 15 places by following the runners in front of him, rather than the unmarked race route. He swore it wouldn't happen again. For the next two decades his main claim to fame was beating faster runners who went off course in the heat of battle. These days he is a qualified Mountain Leader, Emergency Medical Technician and member of the Glen of Imaal Mountain Rescue Team.
What will be covered?
* Maps. How to read them, trust them, distrust them then grow to love them.
* Route choice. How to pick the route that works best with your strengths.
* Re-location. What to do when you expect the ground to rise but it is falling.
* Compasses. Why they are not scary and not really that important when you love maps.
* Contours. The most important lines you'll ever meet when on the hills.
* The 3 key words. You'll have to come along to find them out.
Outcome for you?
Seeing and understanding all the information that colourful piece of paper called a map really contains. Using it to make choices. Executing those choices and letting your running speed dictate your result rather than your unfulfilled navigation potential.

a bit of food/drink.
